The Bakesys This morning Bakesys' HQ is jumping to the sweet sounds of "The Shack"! This was the first ever compilation release & indeed the first ever CD that The Bakesys appeared on. The comp was released in the UK on DOJO Records in the UK & on Bib Records in the USA in 1993. I still remember the feeling of shock & amazement i felt when i actually saw a copy of the CD sitting on the new release shelf in the Newbury branch of Our Price Records. In 1993 it was pretty much impossible to find a ska release of any description in somewhere like Our Price Records, let alone a ska release that featured my band, so i grabbed a copy & bought it with a huge grin on my face straight away. The fact that i had already received a promo copy of the release from both DOJO Records & Bib Records was totally irrelevant :-) So many great tunes on the release too: "Dance Wid Me" by Hepcat, The Toasters' "Social Security", "Nostalgia" by Maroon Town, THE HOTKNIVES' "Dave & Mary", "Peace Is Wonder" by Messer Banzani Unofficial, Laurel Aitken's "Rude Boy Dream" & lots more besides, as well as of course The Bakesys' "Animated Violence". Certainly brings back many great memories hearing it now :-)

The Bakesys

The Bakesys One Friday morning way back in 1991 i got a phone call from the singer of Leicester based band Skaboom. He was ringing with a very exciting offer. Skaboom were supposed to be supporting Jamaican reggae legend Desmond Dekker in Bognor Regis that very evening but unfortunately due to illness in the band they couldn't make the show. He said we (The Bakesys) could have the support slot & £100 if we could make it down to Bognor Regis in time. Of course i said "yeah we'll do it" straight away without even thinking about how exactly we were going to achieve this feat :-) We had never supported a Jamaican legend before so it was a no-brainer even though Bognor Regis was hours away & i had no idea whether or not the rest of the band could actually do the show. So i rang Stu at his work & then ran off to Newbury College to track down Stef, Bakesy & Clive. Somehow I managed to find them all, i seem to remember Stef bursting into Bakesy's lesson & shouting something like "sorry Sir, Bakesy has got to leave early, we've got a gig with Desmond!". We sped off down to Bognor Regis & literally walked through the venue door & straight onto the stage & delivered a rip roaring set of our wonky, played way too fast 2 tone which, somewhat miraculously, went down a storm. We got to meet Desmond backstage, he was a top bloke & of course played a fantastic gig. At the end of the evening i discovered a poster on the front door of the venue which read "Due to circumstances beyond the venue's control Skaboom are unable to support Desmond Dekker tonight. Instead Bakesys Midday Joggers from Newbury will be performing, we apologise for any inconvenience caused". I wish i still had that poster :-)

The Bakesys Very exciting news! The Bakesys will soon be entering a recording studio for the first time in 22 years to record a version of The Jam/Style Council classic "Solid Bond In Your Heart"! The track will hopefully be featured on the upcoming "Gifted, Tribute To The Jam" compilation release on Specialized Records. The Specialized Project raises awareness & funds for various charities including the Teenage Cancer Trust through their gigs & compilation releases. Previous years have seen them put out tributes to The Specials (Official), The Beat, Madness, The Clash & Bob Marley. We are really excited to be involved with this project & as you can see from the photo we are already getting into the zone for the recording :-)
