I love this guy. Life always finds a way... And I'll be finding my way later today to playing the 5-8pm Sunday session at Stilt's, Broadwater - Sunday 13 August. May what appeared to be a big mess yesterday turn out to be your beautiful colourful life today.

Rory Faithfield Filling in tomorrow at the Bull & Bush, Boyanup, for Latehorse, with late notice :-)
That’s tomorrow, Sunday 6 August 1pm-4pm

And seeing as I’m here… this is a clip of my loop-station arrangement of the old Stranglers song, “Something Better Change”. Note the unintended “Breakdown" about 1 minute into the clip where I step on the “Bend Down” function foot-switch instead of the “Lo-fi” button, but hey, I’m still here to tell the tale.

May the sun be at your back and your feet move in the direction you intend.

With thanks to Di Rayner for catching me when I trip.

Rory Faithfield Scott Pearce (a local percussionist here in SW Oz) approached me recently about doing some duo gigs together and this is where we were at last Saturday (at the glorious Bush Shack Brewery), our second gig together on one of my new unrecorded songs, “Is It Too late?”…. I think not.

Rory Faithfield So, not only was it my Birthday yesterday but I’m now almost a year free and clear of Hepatitis C, after a few decades of not really knowing how it feels to feel good. My friend Iain Wheldon was there and filmed this clip of ‘Rebel Songs’ (with Scott Pearce) at the Dunsborough Tavern “Sunday Arvo Sesh” (Translation - for those who don’t speak West Australian English - Sunday Afternoon Session). The serendipity of the moment is not lost on me…

“We don't need no rebel songs
To sing under our breath
We stumbled through this brand new day
And died a little death
When we realised that we'd become
The thing we resisted
We don't need no rebel songs
Now that we've untwisted

This is the life, life that is unscripted
With a mystery prize still behind the creaking door
We came back, came back,
We came back from where we drifted”

Rory Faithfield It’s testament to the positive impact someone has had on your life when you find yourself grieving their loss more than you ever imagined you would. Jim Atkins (AKA: Jim Bedhog) died in January and he was the frontman/lead singer of ‘Blackrunner’, The Bedhogs’, ‘The Kelpies’ and ‘The Undertakers’, during the heyday of Australian Independent Punk in the 1980’s. I haven’t stopped thinking about him, every day, since then.

Jim was a punk but he didn’t allow himself to be confined to that box. I was briefly in the Undertakers and got to see how Jim wrote mystical songs from his heart, with fearless vulnerability on one hand and tough as nails rock’n’roll attitude on the other. That intrigued and liberated me. I recall how one of his songs was a celebration of the birth of his daughter - not very punk rock at all, yet totally punk rock because he was honest and real.

I’ve said before how he encouraged me in recent years but even in the days when my skill level was at playing bar-chords in a fast and angry fashion and slapping some bad ill-fitting lyrics on top, he seemed to see something in me and was open and beautiful enough to tell me I had something. To be honest, I didn’t feel I had anything at all other than a drive I couldn’t understand. If any of my teachers at school had of offered me any hope of a future - and they didn’t - it would have meant nothing in the face of being endorsed and encouraged by Jim (Bedhog) Atkins.

I didn’t believe in what he was saying but he believed in me and that’s like a debt that has to be paid by doing the best you can to scrape together the cosmic dollars required to make good on the investment.

This tune appeared during the course of my sound checks at Studio Bistro Gallery in Yalingup - The first, days after Jim passed away and then, last Sunday (9 April 2017) when this snippet was recorded. I looped some arpeggiated chords and percussion from the guitar and played the melody on top. It gave way to a song as well but that's another day's story...

It called itself 'The Spirit of Jim Bedhog'.
